MAF is a nonpolitical nonprofit dedicated to the welfare of mustangs and burros, working collaboratively to support successful adoptions, education, events, and wild mustang projects.
FOUNDER & DIRECTOR
Lynda Sanford, founder and director of the Mustangs of America Foundation, has guided the organization since its establishment in 2007. Her experience, leadership, and dedication have been instrumental in developing and sustaining its programs and initiatives. Her unwavering commitment continues to advance the mission of the Mustangs of America Foundation.
OUR VISION
At the Mustangs of America Foundation (MAF), our vision is a world where mustangs and burros are respected, protected, and valued. We see a future where these animals are honored for their beauty, spirit, and place within the American landscape, and where responsible training, humane care, and successful adoption give them the opportunity to thrive.
Through collaboration with partners such as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), MAF works toward a future that supports the long-term welfare and successful placement of mustangs and burros nationwide.
WHAT WE DO
As a dedicated, all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit, MAF turns its mission into action through education, support, outreach, and collaboration. We educate the public about mustang and burro adoption and training programs while helping new adopters navigate training and transition challenges.
We promote events that showcase mustangs available for adoption and help connect them with responsible, caring homes. MAF also supports agencies involved in wild mustang projects by sharing experience, resources, and practical assistance.

At MAF, our community is at the heart of everything we do. We are a diverse group of individuals united by a shared passion for mustangs and burros and a commitment to their welfare.
Through volunteering, participating in events, spreading awareness, and supporting MAF’s work, every member of our community plays a meaningful role in advancing the mission. We believe every mustang and burro deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion, and that meaningful change begins with people willing to care, participate, and act.
Our Mission in Action: The Story of MAF
At Mustangs of America Foundation (MAF), we are dedicated to the protection, welfare, and adoption of wild mustangs and burros. As an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we help these animals find safe and loving homes. In collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management, we support successful adoptions while helping reduce the number of animals in holding facilities.
In this video, founder Lynda Sanford shares the story of how her deep connection with Nevada’s wild horses became a lifelong mission. From her first encounter with mustangs to establishing a sanctuary, Lynda has dedicated herself to improving the lives of mustangs and burros and helping create second chances through rescue, care, and adoption. She also shares her experiences gentling wild horses, the unique challenges they face, and the profound impact of a special mustang named Lil Gal.
MAF’s mission also reaches beyond the horses. Through partnerships with correctional facilities, participants develop horsemanship skills that can open new opportunities and pathways forward. We also support equine-assisted programs that use mustangs to help veterans and others experience connection, growth, and healing.
