INFORMATION ABOUT THE CLOSER OF THE FLORENCE PRISON:
As many of you have heard the Governor and the Arizona Department of Corrections Director have decided to close Arizona State Prison Complex Florence.
The details have not been ironed out yet but here is what I have learned and the conclusions I have reached.
· The reason for closure is primarily cost
. ASPC Florence is the oldest prison in Arizona so upkeep and maintenance are a huge cost.
. The outdated systems require more correctional officers and staff.
· Inmates will be transferred to other prisons
. There are 2 other state prison complexes within a couple of miles from Florence Complex.
. Inmates in the wild horse and burro program will most likely be transferred to:
. Eyman Complex which is 2 miles from ASPC Florence prison entrance and 1 mile from the holding area.
. Or Florence West which is 1 mile from the Florence Complex entrance and 1 mile from the holding facility.
. The inmates in the wild horse and burro program are currently bused from the yard to the horse and burro area anyway.
· The long term plan for the prison as I understand it is to utilize Florence Complex as a Museum and location for Movies.
· I have not heard any discussion about moving the wild horse and burro facility and I imagine it will stay were it is.
· This decision will primarily effect staff and inmates. Operations will adjust to that change
